iPad 6th Generation: In Review

ipad 6th gen review banner

The iPad 2018 came out recently and it is the latest addition to Apple’s tablets. It is the direct successor of the iPad 2017, 5th generation. According to Apple it has taken what was the best value in their tablets, with some new additions. The Apple A10 Fusion chipset, faster LTE, a more coppery gold finish and even support for the Apple Pencil. Also, the price is half of an iPad Pro.

All of these features have led to debates and discussions about the pros and cons of the 6th generation iPad. Is it suitable for classroom since it comes with a Logitech Rugged Keyboard and Crayon? Is it a good enough upgrade from the iPad Air or the iPad mini because of its faster chipset? Is the Apple Pencil good enough for drawing now that the price is so much less than that of a Pro?

Here is an in-depth review of its pros and cons.

Features That Are Lacking in the new iPad

The 2018 iPad does not have all the features of its predecessor. It lacks the DCI-P3 wide color gamut, color-matching TrueTone display of the Pro. It also does not have the quad-speaker system for landscape stereo. It further does not support 4 GB of RAM for simultaneous side-by-side and slide-over apps. In conclusion, it is objectively less impressive. But it’s half the price of the Pro. The 6th generation iPad has a starting price of $329 instead of $649.

The Distinction of Its Predecessor

There may be extra features in the 2017 iPad but you probably won’t miss them, especially if you have to pay an extra $300 for it. A major distinction between the two is that the new iPad can’t run three apps at once like the Pro. It can run three apps if you use two split-screen apps and a third app showing video in picture-in-picture. But opening a third app in a slide-over window with two apps split-screened will pause any apps running in the background. Thus, it can’t be used like a full computer. But most people will use for what it is; a tablet.

The Highlights of the new iPad

The 2018 iPad also has a smart connector, similar to the iPad Pro. This can easily attach a smart keyboard to the tablet to give the same experience. However, Apple devices are also available on rental at iPad Rental so there is no need to buy it permanently. This new iPad is also features a radical change in its design. It’s thinner, and gets the job done for half the value of a Pro. It features a resolution of 2048by 36 with 264 pixels per inch. The screen has a gold standard common to all Apple screens even if it is slightly less good than a Pro.

What You Are Missing If You Buy It

If you choose to opt for this instead of the iPad Pro, you’ll be missing the following:

1. An only slightly bigger, better screen

2. A faster processor and more RAM for running multiple apps

3. A smart keyboard connector

4. A better cameras

5. More speakers

Since these are the only thing missing, the cheaper iPad is definitely the better choice. The Pro can be used as a laptop replacement, but is it really worth the extra $300?

In Conclusion

The new iPad 6th generation is conclusively a great tablet for people that want just that: a tablet. It does not adhere to the high performance of an iPad Pro, but does include the additional Apple Pencil compatibility and the A10 chipset. Apple Devices can be rented for events so if this is possible you could test it out to your needs. It can be bought for way less money (big pro) but you do need to buy the pencil separately to unlock a key feature. Furthermore, design-wise it’s very traditional but since it has a reasonable price range, we can’t really complain. To rent iPads and other equipment for events contact One World Rental CA.
